What is the Chiltaico Hike?

The Chiltaico Hike is a high-altitude walking experience that combines Andean landscapes, local culture and traditional ways of life near Uyuni.

Along the route, travelers discover ancient stone structures, native cactus vegetation, traditional agricultural fields and pastoral areas where llamas have been raised for generations.

The experience also includes a visit to the Chiltaico livestock area, where your guide will explain traditional llama herding practices and the relationship between local communities and the highland environment.

More than a hike, Chiltaico offers an authentic encounter with the landscapes, traditions and rural life of the Bolivian Andes.

    Discover a traditional fortified structure known as a Pukará and learn about its historical importance in the Andean highlands.
  • Traditional Agricultural Fields

    Observe the stone boundaries known locally as pircas, traditionally used to protect quinoa fields and other cultivated areas from freely roaming llamas.
  • Native Vegetation & Cacti

    Discover native high-altitude vegetation, including remarkable Andean cacti adapted to the region's dry and challenging environment.
  • Traditional Pastoral Areas

    Learn how llama herding is organized across the highlands and discover the traditional practices used by local communities to manage their livestock.
